Dear Wake County Leaders:
Since 1984, Wake County has recognized its outstanding volunteers. For the last three years, we expanded the annual event to recognize all citizens who volunteer for Wake County government and to invite their families. This year, I am chairing the Volunteer Celebration event, and it again promises to be something special.
We ask that you help with three important opportunities:
- Nominating volunteers for special recognition (including Volunteer of the Year)
- Compiling a list of all volunteers, including mailing addresses and phone numbers, so that we might invite them to the event
- Volunteering a staff person from your department or division to help on our Steering Committee, which will kick off soon.
Please ask your supervisory staff to ensure that the top volunteers in their service areas are nominated for special recognition. To enter someone, please use the nomination forms on the right, which are due Monday, June 16, 2008. Send the completed forms to Anne Cameron, Wake County volunteer coordinator, at acameron@co.wake.nc.us (no handwritten forms, please).
The Office of the Governor issues a call each year for nominations of volunteers who contribute the most to their communities – based on time donated and the impact of their volunteer service. Those nominations are then compared competitively, and the top 10 volunteers in the county are selected as “Wake County Commissioners’ Volunteer Award Winners.” From those 10, the top 5 are selected as “N.C. Volunteer Award Winners.”
In 2007, the state initiated a “Medallion Volunteer Award” designation to select the top 20 volunteers in all of North Carolina. Wake County’s top 2006 volunteer, Lou Mitchell, was one of the inaugural “Medallion Award” winners.
Wake County depends on volunteers for all kinds of services – from fighting fires and saving lives to serving on boards, from providing clerical support to assisting at libraries and parks, from assisting with consumer surveys to helping families with foster children. The list of ways in which volunteers contribute to the quality and breadth of Wake County services is endless. Please help us celebrate those who give so much to others.
Sincerely,
Commissioner Betty Lou Ward, Vice Chair |
