2010 Census Day is April 1

Every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts a headcount of every person living in the United States, as mandated by the U.S. Constitution. In addition to determining Congressional representation, the Census helps to describe who we are as a county, state and nation.

Wake employees are encouraged to participate by filling out their 2010 Census questionnaires. A questionnaire will be delivered or mailed to every household in the U.S. this month (March 2010), and questions should be answered based on household composition as of April 1, 2010. The form contains 10 questions, and all responses are confidential and protected by law.

Example questionnaires are available in English and Spanish.

The 2010 Census is important to Wake County in a number of ways and can help to determine:

  • allocations for Wake County's budget (federal and state funds),
  • the distribution of more than $300 billion in federal funds annually (schools, human services, healthcare, etc.) and
  • the allocation of state funds by the state of North Carolina.

Wake County and its municipalities use Census information to plan, fund new and ongoing initiatives, determine locations of police/fire departments and for many other projects.
