Wake Commissioners Adopt $920-million FY '08 Budget

budget graphicThe Wake County Board of Commissioners on Monday, June 18, adopted a $920-million budget for fiscal year 2007-08 that emphasizes education, mental health and public safety programs, and would raise taxes 4.4 cents.

The adopted budget exceeds County Manager David Cooke's recommended budget by $6 million, due to changes made by the Board of Commissioners to support an additional 0.8-cent property tax increase for the school system.

Human Services Offers Update on Extremely Drug Resistant TB

Carol Dukes Hamilton, medical director for the N.C. TB Control Program, offers an update on XDR TB.As an international traveler and the news media last month made the global community more aware of extremely drug resistant tuberculosis (XDR TB), area health care providers gathered for a workshop on TB: Assessing the Risk for You, Your Workplace, Your Community. This update, offered by Wake County Human Services' TB Control Program and Wake AHEC on May 30, 2007, was especially opportune.

Mike BachmanMike Bachman is a Paramedic for Public Safety. In the 3 1/2 years he has been with Wake EMS, he has taken on numerous leadership roles. His commitment and expertise is ever present, but one call in particular that Mike responded to illustrates his character.

Supportive Employment Program Awarded Three-Year Accreditation

CARF logoWake County Human Services' Supportive Employment Program has earned a three-year international accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). The three-year accreditation, which extends through May 2010, is the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization.

Wake Employees Give the Gift of Life

Carla Piedrahita and Liz Kulpa give the gift of lifeMore than 100 Wake County employees helped save lives during the Wake County/American Red Cross semiannual blood drive June 20 and 21, 2007. In fact, 112 employees donated blood, exceeding the goal of 100.

HR States Sexual Harassment Policy

Wake County policy expressly prohibits sexual harassment in any form. In addition, each of us is responsible for respecting the rights of our co-workers and for creating an atmosphere free of discrimination and harassment. Complaints alleging sexual harassment will be investigated by Human Resources. Retaliation of any kind against an employee for filing a complaint under this policy or for assisting in an investigation is prohibited and is grounds for disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal. Adventure Week Provides Valuable Outdoor Experience for Kids

Ready to canoe at Lake CrabtreeWake County park staff gave 15 children ages 9-12 a week-long adventure June 18-22, 2007. They learned outdoor skills, enjoyed nature and discovered the unique qualities of each of Wake County's Parks during Adventure Week Day Camp. From canoeing and orienteering to nature journaling and crafts, participants learned valuable skills in an outdoor setting. For more information, go to www.wakegov.com/parks.
